- The course will suit those with no previous experience in journalism and will also appeal to individuals working in journalism, public relations, marketing or communications who wish to gain a broader appreciation of the principles and practice of journalism.

2 years (4 semesters)
Orientation:
The first semester begins with a one-week orientation where in the students are briefed about the new exciting world that they are going to enter and the various challenges that would come on their way These include introduction to the field of Journalism, its diverse aspects, various technicalities involved in it and the required skills to deal with various media. Subsequently, students are expected to further familiarize themselves with the use of the software tools by working with audio-visual. Out-of-station students are encouraged to learn more about Bhubaneswar city, its institutions, public transportation, and other facts that could come in handy when everyone is required to cover a city neighborhood as part of the Reporting and Writing skills.

- Core Subjects:
Core of the NIMS curriculum is an extensive series of lectures and workshops on gathering and presenting news both in print and electronic media, designing layout, communication and its various theories, Development Communication, Media Laws, Advertising , Public Relations and so on. The curriculum also critically explores the role of the media in modern society with the aim of making students reflective as well as effective practitioners. Through laboratory exercises and outside assignments, students learn to seek out information and convey it in journalistic form. This experience helps them develop the variety of skills indispensable to all branches of journalism; in particular, the ability to write clear, straightforward, and concise language. In similar lectures and workshops, students learn to edit news copy and to write headlines for various media.
